Candidate interview terms
Last updated: 4 October 2026
These terms apply when you open an interview link that a company sent you. By selecting "Agree and start" on the interview page, or ticking that you agree and selecting "Start my interview", you agree to them.
1. Who runs the interview
The company that sent you the link runs the interview. dontapplyai, operated by dontapply.ai, Inc., provides the page the questions appear on.
2. What you agree to
During the interview, you agree not to use AI tools, or assistants that read the screen or listen to the call, to help you answer. You also agree to answer only the questions your interviewer points you to. The page shows several questions at once.
3. What the page checks
Before the questions appear, and again when you start, the page checks your browser. It sends us your browser and its version, your operating system, whether your browser offers screen protection, and whether the window is large enough to read a question. Your interviewer sees these.
It also reads, without asking you: your time zone and languages, the platform your browser names, whether software says it is controlling your browser, the size and colour depth of your screen and whether a second screen is connected, the number of processor cores, the memory and the graphics card your browser reports. We compare your time zone with the one your connection's address suggests. Unless your interviewer turned it off, the page also asks a server for the address your browser reaches the internet from, and we compare it with your connection's address to see whether you use a VPN or proxy. We don't keep that address. We also look your connection's address up on public lists of VPN servers and Tor exits. If your interviewer turned it on, the page also sends a one-way hash of how your device draws text and of the details above, and we tell your interviewer whether the same device opened their company's other interviews. Your interviewer sees all of these.
It also checks whether any browser extension on our list of AI assistants is installed, and looks for no other extension. It sends only which of the listed extensions it found, and your interviewer sees their names.
Unless your interviewer turned it off, the page asks you to confirm your email address with a 6-digit code we email you. Your interviewer may also have given us your address. We use it only to send the code and, if your interviewer schedules the interview, the calendar invitation and any change to it. Your interviewer sees it. The invitation has a link to cancel the interview, where you can leave your interviewer a message. We keep the message with the interview.
Unless your interviewer turned it off, the page may ask for your browser's location. It asks only when you click Allow, and your browser asks you first. If you allow it, the page sends us your latitude and longitude rounded to about 1 km, and how accurate your browser says it is. If you refuse, the page tells us so and you can still go on. Your interviewer sees your location, or that you refused, and we keep it with the interview and delete it with it.
While the interview runs, the page also sends us the size of your window, where your pointer is on the page, and when you switch to another tab or window and come back. Your interviewer sees your pointer on a copy of the page, with a map of where it went on each question. We delete the pointer positions when the interview ends. We keep the times you switched away and came back with the interview, and delete them with it.
During the interview the page also tells us when you copy from the page, when a second screen is connected or disconnected and, unless your interviewer turned these off, when you paste into the code box and when developer tools likely open in your browser. It sends only that each happened and when, never what you copied or pasted. Your interviewer sees these, and we keep them with the interview and delete them with it.
On a code question, the page also sends us the text you type in the code box under the question, about once a second while it changes. It sends only the text. It does not send the keys you press or when you typed. Your interviewer sees it as it arrives. We keep the last version with the interview as your answer, and delete it with the interview.
4. What the page never does
The page doesn't use your camera or microphone, doesn't record the screen or the call, doesn't read your files, the keys you press or what you copy or paste, and doesn't use website analytics. It sets one cookie, which keeps your browser on this interview's link for a day. If it asks whether you have a visual impairment, your answer is sent to the interviewer, who may arrange another way to interview you. It is deleted with the interview.
5. Who decides
dontapplyai makes no decisions about you. Your interviewer and the company decide what the checks mean and what happens next. If you think the page reported something wrongly, tell your interviewer.
Our privacy policy explains what we keep about candidates and for how long.
6. Questions
If you have any questions about these terms, email us at [email protected] or use our contact form. Questions about the interview itself are for the company that sent you the link.
